Webcessible Goals

1. Never run a web page which says "Under Construction" and nothing else. Always place at least a brief explanation of your product on even a page under development. Otherwise you are wasting your resources and discouraging potential customers.

2. Simplify. A complex design may look good on paper, but is it easy enough for your customers to navigate?

3. Minimize graphics. A lot of graphics might look nice on your local computer, but they may take a long time to load on your customer's machine. Consider the customer who has low bandwidth, or who is viewing your web page in text only, on Web-TV (40 column screen) or on his cell phone. Users with visual handicaps or who use automated text-to-voice readers may not be able to make sense of graphics. At very least, your web page should stand on its own in text only mode (graphics turned off). Doing this will also be helpful when search engines browse your web page with their automated software (which doesn't render graphics). That will help you get listed on the search engines and send you traffic & new customers.

4. Minimize the use of color. Minimize black or dark backgrounds, which are ugly. Maximize text to background contrast. Minimize very small text. Bad combinations of color, of background, or of text size make a web page difficult to read, especially on some displays or for people with visual impairments.

5. Minimize the use of secure server. Some text only browsers cannot handle secure sessions. You usually don't need a secure session just to display general information about your company or service.

6. Minimize the use of java and other applications. Some browsers have trouble rendering it.

7. Minimize the use of MySQL or other database, unless your web page needs it. There are security issues and risks.

Anyway, that is what I would do. Many web pages, some of them for large companies ignore some of these goals. I think they can do better. Here at Webcesessible we try to design web pages with these goals in mind. The page you are viewing now is an example of this.
